Mbappe swaps shirts with Pique

Monaco are well aware of the talented 18-year-old striker they have on their hands, and amidst discussions on his future, Kylian Mbappe swapped shirts with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique during the France-Spain friendly that took place Tuesday at the Stade de France.

The decision won't have gone down well in the Spanish capital, as Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is preparing a 'galactico' signing, and many expect Mbappe to be it.

The young French striker sought out the Catalan defender in the tunnel at half-time to ask him for his shirt, while the Blaugrana star duly obliged.

Messi banned for four matches by FIFA

Messi banned for four matches by FIFA

Argentina forward Lionel Messi has been banned from their next four competitive internationals, starting with Tuesday's World Cup qualifier in Bolivia, for swearing at a match official, FIFA said on Tuesday.

The decision was announced less than six hours before kickoff of the match in La Paz and means that the five-times world player of the year will play in only one of Argentina's remaining five World Cup qualifiers.

His absence will be a severe blow to the two-times world champions who are struggling in the marathon South American campaign where their results have included home defeats by Ecuador and Paraguay and a 3-0 mauling by arch-rivals Brazil.

Television pictures showed him swearing at Brazilian linesman Emerson Augusto do Carvalho at the end of the match after being harried and fouled by Chilean player Jean Beausejour. The official patted him on the head and tried to calm him down but Messi kept ranting.

FIFA said in a letter to the Argentine Football Association (AFA), published by Argentine media, that the incident was not detailed in the referee's report at the time and was brought to their attention by the media.

According to the letter, Carvalho said he did not understand at the time what Messi was saying.

"I only realised he was swearing afterwards on reading the press," he said.

Messi, 29, will also miss games away to Uruguay and home to Venezuela and Peru. The Barcelona forward will be eligible again when Argentina visit Ecuador on Oct. 10.

Argentina are third in the 10-team South American group with 22 points from 13 games but have only a two-point cushion over sixth-placed Chile, with Colombia (21) and Ecuador (20) sandwiched in between.

The top four qualify directly for the tournament in Russia and the fifth side play off against a team from a different confederation for another place.

"This decision is in line with the FIFA Disciplinary Committee's previous rulings in similar cases," FIFA said.

Messi has not enjoyed the same success with Argentina as he has with his club Barcelona and announced his international retirement earlier this year before back-tracking on his decision.

He was frustrated after they lost 1-0 after extra-time to Germany in the World Cup final in 2014, then on penalties to Chile in the Copa America the following year and again on penalties to Chile in the Copa Centenario final last year.

Are Isco and Iniesta incompatible?

As two of the most talented Spanish midfielders of their generation, Spain would be expected to find a way to get Andres Iniesta and Isco playing together, and yet they are routinely separated.

Friday night's win over Israel saw the Real Madrid man replace his international colleague for the second time in a row under Julen Lopetegui, who just like Vicente del Bosque appears none too keen to pair them up.

Only once in the past 18 games have both Iniesta and Isco been on the pitch at the same time, in the 1-0 win over Ukraine in qualifying for Euro 2016.

Otherwise, Isco has been substituted on for the Barcelona playmaker on five occasions in this run, sitting out seven games altogether through injury or tactical reasons.

However the 24-year-old is in a rich vein of form in the present campaign and while Iniesta can also boast an excellent standard of play, Lopetegui may be drawn into breaking this habit sooner rather than later.

Sergi Roberto: Unzue would be a great coach for Barcelona

After being left out of the Spanish squad set to face Israel and France in friendly matches, Sergi Roberto had time to address several issues regarding Barcelona, such as the possibility of Juan Carlos Unzue making the jump from assistant to head coach at the Camp Nou.

The Champions League hero seems to be one of several dressing room voices backing the ex-keeper and set-piece expert to become first team boss.

"[Should Unzue be hired as our new coach,] it would be a great way of maintaining Barcelona's philosophy," Roberto told TV3. "We have an great relationship with him.

"Even though he is technically in charge of strategy, he always gives us very good tips overall.

"He would be a great coach for Barcelona."

After the improbable comeback against Paris Saint-Germain, the 25-year-old admitted the Catalans are confident about their chances in the top European competition.

"Winning another Champions League would be very exciting, there is no doubt about it.

"I wouldn't say it is a priority for us, but it would mean a lot to win it after the comeback."

Lastly, the converted midfielder briefly discussed the Blaugrana's next opponent - Juventus.

"As your typical Italian side, they are a stout defensive team," he concluded.

"Moreover, their attacking players are incredibly skilled, so we know that advancing to the semi-final will be far from easy."

Simeone outperforming himself in the second half of the season

Simeone outperforming himself in the second half of the season

Even by Diego Simeone's own admission, Atletico Madrid's 2016/17 campaign has been far tougher than previously envisaged, although a fightback is well and truly underway at Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Injuries to the likes of Jan Oblak, Augusto Fernandez, Tiago, and now Sime Vrsaljko have combined with January's FIFA transfer ban and an uncharacteristically poor start to the season to leave Los Rojiblancos fighting for Champions League qualification.

However, their fortunes have turned around significantly since the second half of the season began, with seven points recovered in the gap from third-placed Sevilla in the last three rounds alone.

Sunday's 3-1 win over the Andalusians put Atleti two points behind their main rivals and completed their best start to their LaLiga return matches across Simeone's spell at the club.

In the nine games since the midway point of the season, the Madrid side have won six, drawn two and lost one to earn 20 points, beating their previous best of last season by a margin of three goals - notching 18 to 15.

In previous years, Atletico have managed to bag 18 points over the same period in 2014/15, going one better than the start of their run to title glory in 2013/14.

Therefore, a rejuvenated atmosphere engulfs the Calderon as Simeone pushes his side towards the top three along with their quest for Champions League glory, which takes them to Leicester City in the last-eight.

Messi: Master of braces

Messi: Master of braces

Barcelona's Sunday night victory over Valencia saw Lionel Messi reach yet another milestone, this time scoring his 100th brace for the club.

Given that he hasn't even reached his 30th birthday, which he will do this June, it is an even more impressive achievement.

Sevilla are the team to have suffered the most from the Argentine's doubles, having conceded twice in one match to Messi on six occasions, while Atletico Madrid have done so four times.

As for which competitions he has scored his braces, 70 of them have come in LaLiga, 19 in the Champions League, eight in the Copa del Rey and one in each of the UEFA Super Cup, Supercopa de Espana and Club World Cup.

For Messi, his two-goal performance against Valencia was the perfect way to put a couple of quiet showings behind him, having been ineffective against Deportivo La Coruna and having been good but not great in the Paris Saint-Germain comeback.

The goals also moved him onto 25 league goals for the season and further clear in the race for the Pichichi and European Golden Boot.

Busquets: Sometimes the line of what is respectable is blurred because of the rivalry

As is usual when Barcelona and Real Madrid players join together for the Spanish national team, club rivalry was put on hold, for the time being at least, as Sergio Busquets lamented the lack of respect from both sides on several occasions.

Sergio Ramos has admitted that he is able to put his past differences with Gerard Pique to the side to focus on La Roja's upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Israel on Friday, which has led to a more favourable atmosphere.

"Sometimes the line of what is respectable is blurred because of the Real Madrid-Barcelona rivarly," the Catalan defensive midfielder stated. "Most of all there needs to be respect.

"It has been a lot of years now that Pique and Ramos join with La Roja and create a good atmosphere.

"Here Ramos is the captain and is higher up in the team hierarchy, while at Barcelona Pique has more of the protagonism."

Busquets also responded to Ramos' post-PSG dig at Barcelona, who had contended that it was historic, although insinuating that that was the case because of refereeing controversy.

"Let them say what they want," Busquets said of the matter. "I'm not one to get into that type of war.

"Sometimes you thik one thing, and you say another.

"Between us here [with Spain], we don't give those types of comments too much importance - it happens and that is that."

At Barcelona, Luis Enrique's 3-4-3 has altered Busquets' play slightly, and the midfielder highlighted some of the major differences.

"Every system has its good and its bad things, depending on the team," he pointed out. "Now that we are playing a 3-4-3, opposing teams are placing a man on me and I am receiving the ball less than I was accustomed to."

Busquets refused to speak of the vacant Barcelona coaching position after Luis Enrique steps down at the end of the season, but did acknowledge that he already knows Juan Carlos Unzue well and has hardly even met Ernesto Valverde.

"It is not right for me to comment on it," he concluded. "I don't know Valverde and out of respect for the club he is currently training, I won't speak of the matter."

Klopp confident he is the right manager for Liverpool

6:31 AM
Klopp confident he is the right manager for Liverpool

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp remains convinced he is the best person to lead the club to its first Premier League title since 1990.

With just three wins from last nine Premier League games, Liverpool have seen their title bid fade but back-to-back victories over Arsenal and Burnley have helped strengthen their grip on a top-four spot.

Liverpool's slump since the turn of the year may have dashed hopes of silverware but Klopp felt qualification for next season's Champions League would represent "an outstanding success".

"I feel supporters still think I'm the right person in the right place so we feel that trust and faith," Klopp told British media. "I always think about alternatives. Is there somebody else who could do it better?

"If I knew somebody who could do it better I wouldn't be here. How long it will take? I have no idea but everybody should see we tried every day really hard.

"I would say this season going to the Champions League would be an outstanding success because of all the quality around us."

Klopp also called for patience in his quest to end the club's wait for the league title.

"There is pressure and sometimes we are still not patient enough," he added ahead of Sunday's trip to Manchester City.

"We have a lot of fans that maybe were not alive when we won the last title. My job is to make it more likely."

Liverpool are fourth in the table with 55 points, one behind third-placed City, who have a game in hand.

Verano sin revolución en el Barcelona

6:16 AM

Guardiola: I have more power than ever to shape the squad

Guardiola: I have more power than ever to shape the squad

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will not turn to a more defensive approach to shut out Liverpool, the Premier League's leading scorers, when the teams meet at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Guardiola was fiercely criticised for his attack-minded tactics during the Champions League last-16 tie against Monaco, which they lost on away goals as the French side brutally exposed City's fragile defence in a 6-6 aggregate draw.

"No. At the end we have to try," Guardiola told reporters on Friday when asked if he would be making tactical changes for the Liverpool clash.

"We have to defend better. When we create these kind of chances the opponents have to sit back."

"I have more power than ever to shape the squad," he said.

Guardiola also rejected reports suggesting City are preparing for a major clear-out in the next transfer window as the manager looks to reshape his squad.

"I have heard people have written that I will change 12 or 13 players. That is impossible. They have contract. You have to pay them," the Spaniard added.

"We will try and improve the team. Next month and a half I expect a huge step forward. Next season will be better. Just because they are out of contract doesn't mean they will all leave. Some will stay."

Guardiola said he was wary of rushing back injury-prone captain Vincent Kompany, who has made just six appearances this season, following his latest injury setback.

"I would like a little bit more time with him to be sure... But we're so happy with his progress," Guardiola said.

City are third in the table with 56 points, one above fourth-placed Liverpool who have played one game more.

Aduriz, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ramos to battle head on

6:03 AM
Aduriz, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ramos to battle head on

Aside from aiming to collect three valuable points for their respective squads, Cristiano Ronaldo and Aritz Aduriz continue their battle to become LaLiga's active leading scorer off headers.

As of now, the Portuguese superstar has scored 46 goals in seven and a half seasons, whereas the Basque striker's tally stands at 45 goals in four more years than his counterpart.

Moreover, Aduriz needs to find the net twice in order to achieve the 100-goals benchmark in an Athletic Club uniform.

It will not be an easy task considering he has only managed to score a pair in 17 outings against Real Madrid.

Nevertheless, the Spanish international has fared better when facing Keylor Navas, whom he's beaten three times, the most in LaLiga alongside Luis Suarez and Piti.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo will be trying to score his maiden goal at the new Estadio San Mames.

The Madeira native arrives to this crucial match on a hot streak, having scored in his last four LaLiga fixtures versus Betis, Las Palmas, Villarreal and Valencia.

Even if he lacks the statistics, Sergio Ramos shall not be forgotten when discussing heading specialists.

The Andalusian has scored an incredible 11 goals thus far this season, all of them except for one coming via his head.

Aware that Ramos has been a force lately on set pieces, Ernesto Valverde has designed a special plan to stop the star centre-back in such situations.

Marcelo: Real Madrid's unsung hero

6:00 AM
Marcelo: Real Madrid's unsung hero

Ask the question of who Real Madrid's biggest big name player is and most will come up with the same name (hint - he has a habit for scoring stoppage time headers when it matters most). Indeed, Sergio Ramos has become an almost mythical figure at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu given how he has saved his team, but he isn't alone in thriving on the big occasion.

When Real Madrid need players to stand up and be counted Marcelo is continually one of the first on his feet. This was illustrated by the Brazilian's performance against Real Betis last weekend. Ramos might have scored the late winner, as he so often does, but Marcelo was the one driving Real Madrid forward in search of the goal that would have, and did, take them above Barcelona and into top spot. It certainly wasn't the first time the Brazilian has helped to dig his team out of a hole.

Of course, the left back has long been a firm favourite of Madridistas, but his role in this Real Madrid team is largely understated. He might not have the Ballon d'Ors that Cristiano Ronaldo has, or the price tag and goals of Gareth Bale or Karim Benzema, but Marcelo is a true great of his generation. It's time that was fully recognised.

Signed as a Roberto Carlos-lite from Fluminense in 2007, Marcelo has now eclipsed the Real Madrid legend he spent the early part of his career being compared to.

"I hope Marcelo is not better than me, but he is doing very well," Carlos laughed in an interview last year, hinting at how there is now a genuine debate to be had over which Brazilian left-back was the better player for Real Madrid. "It is necessary to see, but now he is the best left-sided defender that there is in the world. Technically he is better; I was more power and punch."

From a tactical perspective, Marcelo is a more significant figure than Carlos ever was. Listen to the 28-year-old speak, even in the somewhat sterile setting of a pre-match press conference, and it becomes clear rather quickly that he isn't the most orthodox footballing character. Although you probably deduced that from his his eccentric dress sense and eye-catching hairstyle. He isn't the most orthodox of left-backs either.

In fact, Marcelo isn't really a left back at all. Describing him as such doesn't really do justice to the importance of the Brazilian's fury at Real Madrid. He's not really a left wing back either. He is Real Madrid's whole left side, dominating an entire flank all on his own, whenever he plays. It's been that way for a decade.

With Marcelo on the pitch Zinedine Zidane, and all of his predecessors who have coached the Brazilian, need not worry too much with anything concerning the left wing. He is relentless in his running of the touchline, providing an outlet from start to finish. Some may bemoan his occasional defensive naivety, but to highlight that shows a misunderstanding of what he offers and why Real Madrid can't do without him.

"It is a joy to watch him play," Zidane gushed after a pre-season game during the summer. "He is showing himself to be a captain. He is spectacular and it is important for a captain to lead by example." Much like was the case with Dani Alves at Barcelona, it might not be until Marcelo no longer calls the Bernabeu home that his true contribution is acknowledged by more than just the faithful.

Given how much he has achieved over the course of 10 years at Real Madrid, it's remarkable that he's only 28. It's possible he might just be coming into his best years as a professional, which is quite the thought considering how he has been the most consistently excellent left-back in the European game since making the move to the Spanish capital in 2007.

The 'modern full-back' is spoken about as a position in its own right and Marcelo has set the precedent during his time in Spain. When this generation of Real Madrid is looked back upon, the glories reminisced over, Marcelo will deserve his fair share of the credit.

Real Madrid in panic mode over upcoming international week

5:54 AM
Real Madrid in panic mode over upcoming international week

With the business end of the season fast approaching, any minor slip-up can have major implications in Real Madrid's quest for the LaLiga and Champions League double, and a poorly timed international week has Zinedine Zidane and his staff sweating.

A demanding schedule can take its toll despite the best intentions of the French coach's rotations, and with so many international stars, it won't be much of a break.

In fact, the added travel is sure to increase the mileage on already tired legs within the senior squad.

The month of April will surely prove decisive, with matches against Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern sure to bring out the best in Los Blancos.

An injury-rudded season to begin with could therefore get even worse as the intensity and frequency of games goes up.

It is little surprise, then, that Real Madrid have taken precautionary measures and talked to some of the national team coaches to discuss the situation regarding their most important names.

Pepe and Raphael Varane will not feature against Athletic Club on the weekend but have been called up for Portugal and France, so an extra close eye is being kept on their respective cases.

With many of the European stars having friendlies after their first qualifier, minutes will have to be managed in a way that leaves all parties satisfied.

As many games as there are ahead of them, it wouldn't be a surprise if some recognisable Real faces were left on the bench the full 90 minutes to get a much needed breather.

Barcelona complain about Real Madrid

1:36 PM
Barcelona complain about Real Madrid

As much as the coaches and the players of Barcelona and Real Madrid deny it publicly, the truth is that the one follows closely what the other does both on and off the pitch, and the Catalans feel they have just cause to complain about favourable treatment being given to Los Blancos.

Both know that if their eternal rival is well, something bad is just around the corner, so they'll look at how each is treated by referees and the media.

On this last issue there is a certain discomfort at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona feels there is a huge difference in terms of the treatment they receive from the mass media with respect to the refereeing controversies.

For example, they are aggrieved by what happened after the match against Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona do not understand the stir caused by the performance of Denis Aytekin and the amount of information published in this regard.

Nor do they understand when Real Madrid are favoured by refereeing errors - as they were against Betis - and there is not as much impact.

In fact, it is not something that is too surprising to Barcelona's squad, who at some point this season have even demonstrated their displeasure to the board.

Although the Catalan club considers it a lost battle and takes it with some resignation, there is no less displeasure behind closed doors.

Ahead of next weekend's match at the new Estadio San Mames, Zinedine Zidane's squad trained with basketball coach Pablo Laso's side.

In the fun session, Sergio Llull, Luka Doncic, Dontaye Draper, Felipe Reyes, Rudy Fernandez and Gustavo Ayon participated in free throw, three point and other shooting drills with the football stars, before engaging in a five on five half-court practice match.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe missed out as they were still undergoing injury recoveries in the gym, whereas Fabio Coentrao and Raphael Varane are doing their Tuesday recovery work on the pitch.

Zidane: It all started with Victor

7:37 AM
Zidane: It all started with Victor

On Sunday night, Zinedine Zidane will have fond memories of the time he saluted Victor Sanchez, the coach against whom he made his LaLiga debut.

January 9, 2016, was the date when Real Madrid played against Deportivo La Coruna, their first official test under the French boss after Rafa Benitez had been relieved of his duties due to poor results.

The 1998 World Cup winner initiated the challenging task of righting Los Blancos' ship with a convincing 5-0 victory.

Fourteen months later, Zidane has led Madrid to three titles and has consolidated his status as a top flight coach.

Now at the helm of Real Betis, Sanchez has nothing but kind words for his counterpart.

"[Zidane] has collected sensational results at a club that demands excellence," he said.

"He deserves all my respect for how well he's handling it."

The presence of the ex-Deportivo coach will probably be a spark for Zidane, who aims to replicate a superb run that started 14 months ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro could miss upcoming Athletic Club clash

Hosting Betis on Sunday night, Real Madrid will be hoping Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro don't pick up a yellow card as that would mean Los Blancos would be without them in their next LaLiga clash against Athletic Club at Estadio San Mames next week.

Rotations are expected from Zinedine Zidane, especially after a dominant performance against Eibar in which plenty of fringe players contributed with an impressive display.

Ronaldo is more likely to play than his midfield counterpart, who has seen his minutes allotted as much as possible so as to ensure he is available and at his best when it matters most.

Zidane has to rotate in April

7:11 AM
Zidane has to rotate in April

As of April 2, after the international break, Real Madrid's incredibly tight schedule could aggravate the consequences of the FIFA virus.

Nine meetings in a month and in the decisive part of the season mean that Zinedine Zidane will have to rotate his players to avoid muscle fatigue and overload.

"I want to have the squad ready and choose the team I think fit for each match we have," he said.

"When we return from the international break, we have nine games in 28 days."

Los Blancos will have to face Alaves, Leganes and Atletico Madrid before the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Morata continues to hammer in goals

4:19 AM
Morata continues to hammer in goals

Averaging a goal every 104 minutes, Alvaro Morata is making the most of the playing time he gets, and is in fact the best out of the entire Real Madrid squad in terms of his goalscoring ratio per minutes played.

None of the members of BBC have a better record than the ex-Juventus man, his latest strike silencing the Stadio San Paolo.

Cristiano Ronaldo comes closest with a goal every 114 minutes, whereas Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale average one every 149 and 174 minutes respectively.

With 13 goals this season, Morata trails Benzema by just two, despite playing almost 1,000 fewer minutes than the Frenchman.

In Champions League, the Spaniard's numbers are even more impressive with a goal every 54 minutes.

He has found the back of the net three times in Europe's elite competition this season - Sporting CP, Legia Warsaw and now Napoli - while doing so in just 162 minutes on the pitch.

Amongst Barcelona's MSN trio, only Lionel Messi has a better ratio than Morata, with one goal every 84 minutes.

Selection headache looming for Zidane

4:00 AM
Selection headache looming for Zidane

Not even Zinedine Zidane's rotation policy can keep everybody happy when Real Madrid take on Real Betis this Sunday with a large number of players due a run out.

With the French coach maintaining his philosophy of shifting around his starting XI following wins against Eibar and Napoli, he is finding that there simply aren't enough spots in the team to go around.

Each of Lucas Vazquez, James Rodriguez, Isco, Alvaro Morata, and Marco Asensio have made a sterling case for their inclusion and can be said to be under compensated for their efforts so far thiss season.

However, Casemiro and Cristiano Ronaldo are expected to start having been rested last weekend, and Gareth Bale will also require more game time to fully hit match sharpness after a long-term injury.

That leaves only Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Karim Benzema as truly viable for a spell on the bench and yet Zidane knows that such won't be entirely necessary given Real's free week after the Betis encounter.

Therefore, a true dilemma is gripping Los Blancos. Arguably, results on the pitch suggest how there cannot be a wrong answer, as the boss can either keep his first-team together and replicate the Napoli side, or switch things up to a tune that proved successful at Estadio Ipurua just days before.

UEFA expected to sideline referee Aytekin after PSG debacle

Referee Deniz Aytekin will almost certainly be away from the Champions League for the foreseeable future after an internal decision made by the UEFA officiating body.

The official report has made it less likely that Aytekin will officiate another high-profile match in the top European competition this season.

Aytekin's match report has reached Pierluigi Collina, head of the European Refereeing committee, at the headquarters in Nyon.

While the Federation has publicly come to his defence, it has also internally gone over the mistakes made, as is customary after matches.

"I feel sorry for the world of football," Norway coach Lagerback had lamented of the officiating after what he considered to be a Luis Suarez dive that led to a crucial Barcelona penalty.

Because of UEFA's way of handling referees, any form of punishment will not be made public, but rather improvements will be made privately.

On Sunday, the under-fire referee will officiate the Hamburg- Monchengladbach Bundesliga clash.

Real Madrid players left stunned by Barcelona-PSG refereeing performance

Real Madrid players left stunned by Barcelona-PSG refereeing performance

Training on Thursday morning saw Real Madrid players' minds dominated by one game: Barcelona's comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain, and the officiating that aided it.

While Los Blancos' players were confident that their LaLiga rivals were now returned to the podium of genuine contenders for the crown, along with Juventus, Bayern Munich, and themselves, there was a worry that such incidents took place under the eye of an elite official.

Deniz Aytekin's showing seemed to Real to be the opposite of what UEFA had affirmed would be happening at the start of the season and is chiefly a worry going forward in the competition.

However, Barcelona's presence in the quarter-finals is expected to help drain the Catalans' batteries with the run-in hotting up and the capital side's confidence in Zinedine Zidane's rotation policy has them believing that they possess the edge in this regard.

On the other hand, there is the realisation that Luis Enrique has his charges firing on all cylinders and that their form in LaLiga could mirror the immeasurable comeback witnessed on Wednesday night.

What's for certain is that the last-eight Champions League fixtures will coincide with a tough run of games for Real; the first leg is due just days after they host Atletico Madrid and the deciding Clasico of the campaign will occur on the other side of the return leg.

Asmall earthquake was set off by joyous Barcelona fans at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night as Sergi Roberto secured a 6-1 win over Paris Saint-Germainn.

Just 500 yards away from the Blaugrana arena is the Jaume Almera Institute of Earth Sciences (ICTJA-CSIC), which registered movement on its seismographs a couple of times during the night.

Researcher Jordi Diaz explained how the second and third Barcelona goals nudged their recordings slightly wider than normal before the sixth, which measured one on the Richter scale.

"As the end of the game approached, everything changed," Diaz noted. "With the sixth goal, there is the greatest earthquake of its type recorded at ICTJA-CSIC."

A quake of one on the Richter scale is known as a microearthquake and is rarely felt by people on the ground, but they are registered on seismographs.

Interestingly, the fourth Azulgrana goal didn't make any discernible mark on the scale.

Arelaxed atmosphere overarched Barcelona's final workout ahead of their date with Paris Saint-Germain at the Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique was able to call upon a large portion of his squad to prepare for the second leg, although Aleix Vidal and Jeremy Mathieu remain unavailable.

Andre Gomes is, however, expected to be fit for action having trained in the last few days leading up to the last-16 clash, which kicks off at 20:45 CET on Wednesday night.

Luis Suarez: Nothing is impossible in football

After losing the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie against Paris Saint-Germain by a 4-0 scoreline, Luis Suarez is remaining positive thatBarcelona can upset the odds on Wednesday.

A four-goal turnaround has never been achieved during this stage of the competition, yet Luis Enrique's side are still geared towards making history for their fans, with Suarez of the belief that everyone connected to the club can chip in to help.

"We are all aware of how difficult it is, but in football nothing is impossible," the Uruguay international explained at a press conference.

"If there is a team capable of scoring four goals, it is Barcelona. It will all come with time, patience and our style of play. But despite this, we are aware that we are playing against a top side."

Recent big wins against the likes of Celta Vigo and Sporting Gijon have lifted spirits in Catalonia, with Suarez admitting that their first-leg thrashing was hard to take.

"A lot of time has passed since the 4-0," he added. "The hardest part was the first few days afterwards.

"It was a defeat that hurt us, but the beautiful thing about football is that in a short space of time you are able to pick yourselves back up.

"We have been able to show this ourselves. With our attitude and goals, this is our objective for tomorrow's game. Obviously, you think about the match. We have been looking forward to it for a while, it is a great task for us and for the fans - we've never turned a 4-0 around before.

"The game will be 94 or so minutes long. We have to be patient and aware that we can't play with desperation.

"We have to be ambitious, but we have time to play with, the fans have to be patient too. We have the stats to back us up, in the second halves of games we have been able to score a lot of goals."

The Uruguayan striker admitted that PSG are looking to be a tough proposition, but shared that everyone at Barcelona is united in this attempt to turn the tie on its head.

"We will try to not give them chances, but we know that they are able to do it because they have quality," stated Suarez. "We allowed them to do a lot of damage with the ball.

"We are capable of scoring four goals, for everything that we have done in the last decade. We will give everything to try and rectify the situation, we will give our all.

"Leo [Messi], like the rest of my teammates, is really up for the game. It doesn't only depend on him.

"On the contrary, everyone linked to the club should be pushing in the same direction, to achieve the objective at hand."

Real Madrid's angels step into hell

Real Madrid's angels step into hell

Abattle of 11 men against an army of 70,000 will take place on Tuesday night as Real Madrid seek safe passage to their quarter-finals of the Champions League via the furnace that is the Stadio San Paolo.

Six hours before kick-off, the gates will swing open at the home of Napoli as the home fans attempt to whip up a storm, and it is one of revenge given Los Blancos' victory in the competition on their last visit, some 30 years ago.

After all, this concept of vibrant atmosphere is all that the Neapolitans have to cling to when considering the tie as a whole.

Maurizio Sarri's men simply must give their visitors an early scare on the night to have any genuine hope of overturning their 3-1 defeat in Madrid, although they don't want for positive energy and take heart from the manner of Lorenzo Insigne's opener back at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

However, Real are built for these big occasions. With BBC back up front and the motivation of defending their Champions League crown, Zinedine Zidane's side are not simply attempting to qualify against Napoli but to beat them once again.

Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo will therefore return to the attack to line up alongside a reinvigorated Karim Benzema to press home Madrid's advantage, completing the same starting XI that lifted this very trophy in Milan last year.

Bale: Top six LaLiga teams trump their Premier League rivals

After spending time both in the English top flight and LaLiga, Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale is under the impression that the best clubs in Spain are superior to the top six of the Premier League.

The Wales international has enjoyed a great start to his career in Madrid and isn't showing any signs of looking back as he continues to fight for silverware on two fronts this season.

"In terms of one-to-20 the Premier League is the closest. On any given day, 20th can beat first. Here, not so much. It's a bigger gap," Bale told The Sun.

"But I feel the top six or seven in Spain is really strong and in European competition you've obviously got Real Madrid and Barcelona, Atletico Madrid have been to two finals and Sevilla have won three Europa Leagues.

"The Premier League is by far the most competitive - but the teams that always perform in Europe are Spain."

The former Tottenham winger admitted that the switch to Spain took some thought, and made sure that he was putting himself into a comfortable situation before heading to mainland Europe.

"Before I came over I looked at it," remarked Bale. "David Beckham and Steve McManaman were here for four years but all the rest a year maximum really.

"I thought I could maybe do better than fellow British players, I was young enough and felt I'd proved myself in the Premier League.

"I spoke to Beckham and McManaman, tried to do my research about what people had done wrong before and tried not to make those mistakes. Apart from a little blip in the middle I've felt very settled. "Last season was the most comfortable I've felt and I feel I could be here for a long time now.

"I've made the decision to stay, to see out my contract and maybe longer."

Sarri: The pressure is all on Real Madrid

Sarri: The pressure is all on Real Madrid

With a two-goal deficit to turn around in their game against Real Madrid on Tuesday, Napoli coach, Maurizio Sarri, faced the press to explain his thoughts on the match and how his team would fare against Los Blancos, suggesting that, in fact, the pressure is all on the visitors.

His counterpart, Zinedine Zidane, has already said that he will start with his best XI, meaning that the hosts will need to play an almost perfect game to progress to the quarter-finals.

Sarri highlighted the need for an intimidating atmosphere at the Stadio San Paolo as a start point.

"The atmosphere must serve to help us and not to influence Real, because they are accustomed to big games," he began.

"What matters then is what is transmitted on the pitch.

"To see the eyes of the opponent who wants to give everything and not be fearful."

Dries Mertens remains a key player for the Partnopei and Sarri was quick to clear up any injury worries.

"He can be assessed better on Monday, but I think it was just a hint of cramp," he continued.

Though it's the hosts who have to go after the game, the Napoli coach thinks their opponents will feel more under pressure.

"The pressure is all on them, they are the world champions and the richest club in the world," Sarri noted.

"Real have scored in 46 consecutive games, but we can make it difficult."

With Napoli losing so many balls against Roma in front of their area, Sarri was asked if it was their weak point?

"Roma press in higher areas," he said.

"But that's the way we play, and in any case they didn't score until the 89th minute.

"There are risks when you have fast strikers in front of you, the same risk that we will have on Tuesday.

"But it's up to us to measure that risk."

Zidane to play same XI as in Milan

Zidane to play same XI as in Milan

After the display of energy, speed, togetherness and imaginative gameplay in last Saturday's attacking performance at Eibar, Real Madrid will return to its old version for the visit to the Stadio San Paoloo on Tuesday night.

BBC, with Cristiano Ronaldo rested and without discomfort, will once again be headlining the attack.

Former Real coach, John Toshack, once said: "In the end, we always play the same 11 bastards."

The story with Zinedine Zidane is different and although one of his most important players is not performing at the expected level, as was seen against Las Palmas, Ronaldo will return to the starting lineup against Napoli.

Some may suggest that those absent from the game against Eibar have the right to be back in the side against the Italians in any event.

That, or simply for the reason of them winning the 11th European Cup for the club Milan against Atletico.

However, what the match against Los Armeros demonstrated was that this team is complete, with players such as Marco Asensio, James Rodriguez and Lucas Vazquez always showing desire, energy and a will to win.

These players will be on the bench, at least from the beginning, but they are the future of the team.

Zidane has never hidden that for him, as long as they are well and without problems, BBC's presence in the starting XI is non-negotiable - and it will remain so for the moment.

In his opinion, those three players are a step above the rest or at least those who could take their place in attack, and though the exhibition against Eibar won't be forgotten it doesn't give an automatic passport for ownership of a starting spot.

Dani Carvajal and Marcelo will also start against Napoli.

There is concern about the shape of the Brazilian and the ups and downs of the Spaniard during matches.

Marcelo did not play against Eibar because he is not well.

The coach wants him to recover his best form but it will not stop him starting in the most important game so far this season.

Messi and Neymar strike fear into PSG

Messi and Neymar strike fear into PSG

With the highly-anticipated match against Paris Saint-Germain looming, Lionel Messi and Neymar lead a spectacular performance by Barcelona, who demolished Celta Vigo 5-0 at the Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana forwards appear to be firing on all cylinders, which is not good news for the French giants.

Messi and Neymar, authors of three goals on Saturday night, seamlessly connected all match long, overwhelming the Galician side, one of the peskiest rivals throughout Luis Enrique's three-year tenure as Barcelona coach.

The Argentinian increased his lead as LaLiga's top scorer in the 2016/17 campaign.

With 23 goals to his name, the 29-year-old is not only the favourite to win the Pichichi, but he also is a serious contender for the Golden Boot, which was won by his teammate Luis Suarez last season.

Furthermore, Messi has unlocked a new achievement in his long record list.

Against Celta, the Rosario native became the foreign player with the most appearances for the same club, having tallied 371 LaLiga matches wearing the Barcelona uniform.

Messi and Neymar exemplified their utter dominance in the Catalans' first two goals versus Celta.

Firstly, it was the Argentinian's time to shine with a magnificent solo goal that started around the midfield area.

Five minutes before half-time, Messi left Neymar open with a great pass, which the Brazilian sent to the back of the net with a phenomenal chip over Sergio Alvarez.

The ex-Santos star was arguably the man of the match, thus extending his sweet form in 2017.

Barcelona ready to commit €35m a year to Messi

Barcelona ready to commit €35m a year to Messi

The coaching situation at Barcelona is an issue that pales in comparison with the undertaking required to sign Lionel Messi up to a new contract at the Camp Nou, with the club limited to a 35 million euro annual salary for the Argentine.

In fact, several conditions must be met by the Azulgrana if they are to keep their talisman with money a side issue when it comes to the sporting project, as Messi is aware that time will run out and he seeks to bulk out his trophy cabinet with a successful final third of his career.

Talks over a new contract for the forward are set to be capped at a 35m euro wage as Barcelona consider how best to construct an affordable deal via signing on fees and its impact on sponsorship deals.

Also key to negotiations are Messi's state of mind; his son is schooled in the city and partner Antonella Roccuzzo shares a calm, happy life with the Blaugrana star knowing that the only real alternative for their family would be a return to Argentina and Rosario.

However, such a move is considered a long way off for now and even with salary offers totalling 50m euros from the Chinese Super League, Barcelona are hopeful of this renewal staying on track and eventually being sealed to confirm the 29-year-old's stay in Catalunya for a little while longer.

Cristiano Ronaldo is fit for Napoli return

Real Madrid returned to training at Valdebebas in preparation for their Champions League return against Napoli, and Cristiano Ronaldo was among those who were with the main group.

A short recovery session included a rather intense circulation series and also possession of the ball.

Zinedine Zidane was pleased by the news that Ronaldo appears to be over his ailments after not playing in the Estadio Ipurua, and will be ready for the match next Tuesday.

Fabio Coentrao trained with the group and Varane continued with his own recovery process.

Has Cristiano Ronaldo Surpassed Lionel Messi?

Has Cristiano Ronaldo Surpassed Lionel Messi?

Cristiano Ronaldo
captured his first major trophy with Portugal and that has added international honours to his long list of club medals. Lionel Messi, meanwhile, failed to take Argentina over the line in the Copa America final against Chile. So, has Ronaldo now surpassed Messi as the greatest footballer of this generation?

Who would you pick if you were coach?

Novy Kapadia: If I was looking for a striker, I would pick Cristiano Ronaldo. I don't think anyone can head the ball better than him, only Alan Shearer could.

Scott O' Donell: For me the best thing about Messi is that he is a team player. He provides as many assists as he scores. Ronaldo will never pass the ball if he thinks he can score. If I was coach and had to choose between the two, I would pick Messi any day.

Ronaldo mentally tougher than Messi?

Novy Kapadia: In mental toughness Ronaldo has gone a step ahead of Messi after winning the Euro. He took Portugal to the final, and even though he played just 15 minutes, he was inspirational from the outside. One thing is certain now: Ronaldo is winning his fourth Ballon d'or.

Scott O' Donell: How can one game in which Ronaldo didn't contribute enough make him mentally tougher. In fact I thought Portugal benefitted when Ronaldo left the field because he isn't known for his defensive abilities, and when he was substituted, it allowed Portugal to play 10 men in defence that proved to be the winning strategy in the end. Also how can Ronaldo be mentally tougher when he allows emotions to get in the way of how he plays. Messi on the other hand gets kicked, but he gets up. He doesn't argue with the referee, doesn't argue with his coaches. He just gets up and does his job.

Messi more prolific goal scorer than Ronaldo?

Novy Kapadia: Messi has a better goal average because he plays for Barcelona, probably the most dominant team that club football has ever seen.

Scott O' Donell: When has Ronaldo played for a weak club team? Manchester United and Real Madrid had stars as big as anyone playing alongside Ronaldo.

Messi doesn't have a major international title

Scott O' Donell: I would count the 2008 Olympic gold and the Under-20 World Cup that Messi won with Argentina as major international titles. Yes, the Olympic team is made up of under-23 players and only three senior players are allowed, but ask Brazil how important an Olympic gold in football is, a title they have never won, and are so desperate to win that they decided to rest their star player Neymar for the Copa America Centenario, so that he could play at the Rio Olympics.

Novy Kapadia: Olympic gold is indeed a great achievement. But the pressure one feels at the Euro is only second to the World Cup.
